Define six jobs for the camera

A compact shot list can fit on one screen if every shot has a job. Capture: result, wide context, main action, proof close-up, reaction or consequence, and clean ending. Add one alternate opening and one room-tone recording. This list is deliberately smaller than a film coverage plan; it is for a focused short whose brief already names one viewer and outcome.

Write shots as verbs

“Coffee machine” is not a shot instruction. “Hand locks the portafilter; indicator changes from red to green” tells the operator what must happen and what proof must remain visible. For each line, add framing, orientation, audio and continuity: “close, vertical-safe, natural click, start with handle unlocked.” Mark irreplaceable actions with a star. Film those before decorative B-roll, especially when a product can be consumed, a room will change, or a participant has limited time.

Run a hypothetical eight-shot plan

For a bicycle-light installation: 1) finished light blinking at dusk; 2) wide shot of bike and mounting point; 3) hands show bracket parts; 4) close-up of strap path; 5) side angle of tightening; 6) proof close-up showing no movement when nudged; 7) rider-visible beam from the front, recorded safely off-road; 8) clean product-and-bike ending. The clip should not imply road-safety certification unless verified. This is a hypothetical production example, not a product test.

Protect the vertical edit

Frame the critical action near the center and leave room around hands, faces and labels. TikTok’s current Creative Codes for ads recommends 9:16 capture, high-resolution footage and space for interface elements. That is ad guidance, not a universal organic ranking rule, but the obstruction problem is real across full-screen feeds. Record a five-second safety handle at the start and end of each action. If a horizontal master is required, shoot wider in sufficient resolution and repeat the proof close-up vertically rather than assuming an automatic crop can follow the evidence.

Close the set before leaving

Review the starred shots at normal speed, with headphones, before dismantling anything. Confirm focus on the evidence, no clipped words, no private information in screens, and no brand or person requiring an unplanned clearance. Record ten seconds of the room’s natural sound for smoother edits. Back up original files before renaming or transcoding them, and note any take where the conditions changed. A shot list cannot guarantee a strong story, but it can prevent the common failure of having attractive footage without the one angle that proves the point. Photograph the final setup and note exposure, frame rate, microphone placement and orientation. That continuity record makes a pickup shoot possible without pretending visibly different conditions were one continuous test. Label that reference as continuity documentation, not an image intended for publication.
