Platforms converge on 9:16 without a joint mandate

Pinterest and YouTube each document their own tolerance for vertical video, and 9:16 sits inside both without either calling it a standard.

The test

Two platforms' own current specification pages, both read as living documents on 16 September 2026, show 9:16 functioning as a common vertical reference point for short-form video without either page treating it as a mandatory, jointly agreed format: Pinterest's ad-specification help article and YouTube's Shorts classification help article.

What the evidence says

Pinterest's page recommends 1080x1920 pixels 'for full-screen video Pins' and states the resulting aspect ratio is 9:16, while its general video guidance also lists square (1:1), 2:3 and 4:5 as acceptable vertical alternatives. On Pinterest's own page, 9:16 is one recommended option among several, not the only accepted shape. YouTube's help documentation defines what counts as a Short by aspect ratio rather than by matching 9:16 specifically: any video 'with a square or vertical aspect ratio' up to three minutes long is categorized as a Short, and the same page tells uploaders who want to avoid Shorts classification to use 'a wider aspect ratio such as 16:9' instead. Neither document cites the other, and neither describes 9:16 as an industry standard; each platform independently documents its own tolerance for vertical framing, and 9:16 sits inside that tolerance rather than defining its outer edge.

The sample and the variance

These are two platforms' own specification and help pages, not a survey of every short-form platform's upload requirements, and both are living documents subject to change without a version history visible on the page itself. A full picture would need a similar reading of TikTok's, Snapchat's and Instagram's own current specification pages, which this record does not include. A pixel recommendation such as Pinterest's 1080x1920 describes an upload target, not a guarantee against cropping: the same Pinterest page separately warns that Pins taller than its recommended still-image ratio 'might get cut off in people's feeds.'

What to try next

As an editorial checklist, a producer building one 9:16 master file for multiple platforms can treat 9:16 as a common denominator that satisfies both documented tolerances rather than as a rule either platform states outright, and should still check each destination platform's own current safe-area guidance before assuming a single export works everywhere unedited.

  • Does the target platform's own current specification page state a preferred ratio, or only an accepted range?
  • Would a squarer export better avoid feed cropping on a specific platform, per that platform's own stated warning?
  • Has either cited specification page changed its stated ratio range since this 16 September 2026 reading?

A shared visual habit across apps is not the same as a shared technical standard. Each platform's own documentation, read separately, is what actually defines the tolerance a given export has to fit.
