A one-minute rule now gates TikTok's creator payouts

TikTok's 2024 announcement sets a one-minute video floor and a four-part formula, distinct from other platforms' ad-share rates.

The test

On 18 March 2024, TikTok published an announcement renaming its monetization programme the Creator Rewards Program and retiring the Creativity Program Beta's 'Creator Portal' in favor of a 'Creator Academy.' The post set eligibility at 18 years or older, 'at least 10K followers,' a 'minimum of 100K views in the last 30 days,' a 'personal account in good standing,' and video content 'over a minute long.' TikTok described the payout method as an 'optimized rewards formula focused on four core metrics: originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement,' and said it would also 'automatically reward creators for their account's ad value determined by their community's ad watchtime.'

What the evidence says

This is a platform disclosure of criteria and formula inputs, not a published rate card; TikTok's own post does not state a per-view or per-minute dollar amount, only the four weighted factors and the one-minute floor. The post frames the shift in usage terms rather than payout terms, noting that 'the TikTok community now spends 50% of their time... watching videos longer than one minute,' which TikTok offers as the rationale for rewarding longer content rather than as an audited earnings comparison. TikTok's earlier Creativity Program Beta post shows the same eligibility bar, 10K followers and 100K views, already applied a year earlier, so the 2024 change is a rename and a formula description layered onto largely unchanged entry criteria.

The sample and the variance

The published thresholds apply to personal accounts in 'good standing' that meet the follower and view floors; TikTok does not disclose, in the post reviewed, what fraction of its creator base clears one minute of original content, nor how the four named metrics are weighted against each other. 'Ad value' and 'ad watchtime' are named as inputs without a formula, so the rewards mechanism is described qualitatively, not quantitatively, in this primary source, and it should not be read as directly comparable to a flat, pooled ad-revenue share such as the one YouTube discloses for Shorts.

What to try next

This is an editorial checklist, not a monetization forecast. A creator can reasonably treat the one-minute threshold as the clearest, checkable gate before investing in longer formats; a marketer or platform observer can note that TikTok's four-metric formula is not directly comparable to a flat ad-revenue share without a published rate; and both can watch the Creator Academy documentation for any future disclosure of the formula's actual weighting.

  • Does your content already clear TikTok's one-minute-and-over threshold for reward eligibility?
  • Has TikTok published any rate or weighting for the four named metrics since this announcement?
  • How does a multi-factor rewards formula compare, in your own numbers, with a flat ad-revenue share elsewhere?

The Creator Rewards Program is TikTok's most detailed public account yet of what it weighs, originality, duration, search value, engagement, even though it stops short of saying how much any of those four factors is worth.
