A prompt sticker got a dated TikTok reach promotion

TikTok's own documentation and a 2022 in-app promotion define what Add Yours does and does not guarantee.

Historical context. This record is preserved from the September 16 archive. A new page layout does not mean every original claim was reverified. Event dates describe the subject, not when this site published it.

The test

TikTok's own help center article on Add Yours, retrieved via an archived copy since the live page requires the TikTok app to render, describes a sticker that "allows you to interact with others on TikTok through a prompt that you can add to your video or respond to." A creator attaches a prompt from the camera or editing screen, or picks a trending-topic suggestion; anyone can then respond with their own video. The same document carries in-app promotional copy stating that "from November 1, 2022 to February 29, 2023 you'll have an opportunity to reach a broader audience on TikTok when you start a new Add Yours topic" — a dated, TikTok-run incentive layered on the sticker's ordinary mechanics.

What the evidence says

The help center documents specific permission rules: a prompt is visible to everyone and anyone can respond; a responder can adjust their reply's privacy; the original poster is notified of each response and can mute those notifications; and once posted with an Add Yours button attached, a creator cannot delete just the button, only change the video's privacy or delete it outright. The document adds that TikTok "may add an Add Yours button" to a popular video unasked, and will notify the creator if it does. None of this is a growth claim — it describes a feature's default behavior and its limits. The promotional window is TikTok's own stated test of reach, not a permanent feature: TikTok's copy frames it as "an opportunity," not a guarantee, tied to one four-month period.

The sample and the variance

TikTok's documentation does not state when Add Yours itself first launched; the only dated reference point here is the November 2022 to February 2023 promotional window, a later reach incentive layered onto an already-existing feature, not the sticker's origin. Compared with Stitch, which TikTok's 2020 post frames as a one-to-one, creator-initiated collaboration with automatic attribution, Add Yours is an open, many-to-one chain: one prompt can draw responses from any number of users, and TikTok can insert the button into a popular video unasked. That structural difference matters — a chain format's growth potential depends on how many people choose to respond, which TikTok's documentation does not quantify.

What to try next

This is an editorial reading of TikTok's own language, not a promise that an Add Yours prompt increases reach outside a TikTok-run promotion. A creator can reasonably check whether a live promotion is active before expecting extra distribution, use the per-video privacy setting rather than assuming the prompt-level default, and confirm whether a button was added automatically before treating a spike in responses as self-initiated.

  • Is a similar reach-boosting promotion active now, and does TikTok publish its terms in the app?
  • How does TikTok decide which "popular topic" videos get an automatically inserted Add Yours button?
  • What data has TikTok published comparing response rates on creator-initiated versus automatically added prompts?

Add Yours is documented by TikTok as an open, chain-style prompt with notification and privacy controls, and TikTok has run at least one dated, bounded promotion tied to it; neither amounts to a standing guarantee of broader reach.
