The test

Runway's AI video tools are increasingly used to produce synthetic footage for monetized short-form content, making commercial use a threshold question before that footage goes anywhere. Runway's own help center answers it directly in Can I use the content I made in Runway for commercial purposes, and the company's Terms of Use sets out the fuller license behind that answer, both read as retrieved on 16 September 2026.

What the evidence says

The help article states plainly: 'the content you create using Runway is yours to use without any non-commercial restrictions from us. As between you and Runway, you retain ownership and all your rights for your creations and generations,' and adds that crediting Runway is not required, including on 'YouTube, on social media, or to film festivals'. The Terms of Use, in the section on output ownership, states 'the Company does not claim ownership of any of your Inputs or Outputs' and, on commercial use, 'the Company does not restrict your commercial use of your Outputs'. The same terms document a separate grant running the other direction: by submitting content, a user gives Runway 'a non-exclusive, irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free, fully paid, transferable, sublicensable right and license to use any Inputs and Outputs' for training and improving its models. Ownership and commercial-use freedom on one side, and a standing model-training license on the other, are two different clauses that should not be collapsed into a single claim about 'full ownership'.

The sample and the variance

Both documents are Runway's own current terms, not an independent legal opinion, and neither addresses rights a user might not hold in the first place, such as a likeness or trademark in a generated output, or third-party material used as an input. The help article directs readers to the fuller Terms of Use for 'more specific questions', so the plain-language answer should not be treated as the complete legal text on its own. Neither document states how the training license is exercised in practice or whether a user can opt out.

What to try next

As an editorial reading, a creator or publisher monetizing Runway-generated video can treat the commercial-use question as answered by the company's own documents: ownership stays with the user and commercial use is not restricted. Anyone concerned specifically about inputs or outputs being used to train Runway's future models should read the training-license clause directly, since the help article's short answer omits it.
