The test

The Reuters Institute's Digital News Report 2025 executive summary cites the French creator Hugo Travers, known as HugoDecrypte, as an example within its discussion of personality-led, platform-native news formats reaching younger audiences. The report states that Travers "reaches 22% of under-35s with content distributed mainly via YouTube and TikTok," and describes that reach as "comparable with or higher than many French mainstream news organisations" among the same age group. The report's main 2025 landing page situates this inside a broader finding, quoting lead author Nic Newman's description of "an accelerating shift towards consumption via social media and video platforms" that is "supercharging a fragmented alternative media."

What the evidence says

The 22% figure comes from the Reuters Institute's own survey, conducted by YouGov across more than 40 countries, an independent, methodology-disclosed effort rather than a platform's self-reported figure or a creator's own claim. The report uses HugoDecrypte as a named, single example illustrating a pattern it documents at a country level elsewhere — the landing page reports TikTok as the leading news source in Thailand at 49%, Malaysia at 48% and Kenya at 40%. The comparison to "many French mainstream news organisations" is the report's own characterization; the summary does not publish a side-by-side reach table naming those outlets, so it should be read as qualitative framing, not a ranked list.

The sample and the variance

HugoDecrypte is one named example inside a 40-plus-country survey; the 22% figure describes reach among under-35s in one country, and says nothing about other age groups or the same creator's reach elsewhere. The report notes that "young influencers also play a significant role in many Asian countries, including Thailand," treating the French example as one instance of a broader pattern, not a unique case. A single creator's reach, however large relative to national outlets, is not evidence that platform-native formats outperform institutional news brands everywhere — the country-level figures the report cites vary widely between the markets it names.

What to try next

This is an editorial reading of one example inside an independent survey, not a claim that any creator can replicate HugoDecrypte's reach. A publisher or platform observer studying creator-led news formats can reasonably treat this example as one documented data point about under-35 reach in one country, check the full Digital News Report chapters for country-specific breakdowns before generalizing, and separate a platform-distribution reach figure from a claim about trust, accuracy or editorial standards, which the cited passages do not address.

  • What is HugoDecrypte's reach figure among age groups other than under-35s, if the full report publishes one?
  • How does the Reuters Institute define and measure "reach" for a YouTube- and TikTok-distributed creator compared with a traditional outlet's reach?
  • Does the report's country-level pattern of creator-led or platform-native news hold in markets outside the ones the landing page names?

The Digital News Report's citation of HugoDecrypte documents one under-35 reach figure inside a large, independently surveyed dataset, and the report itself frames it as an example of a broader shift rather than a standalone claim about any single creator's exceptional performance.
