History / Source record

Dubsmash's own press page outlived its independence

Dubsmash's own press archive and a Reddit SEC filing trace the German lip-sync app's path from a 2015 breakout to a Reddit-owned subsidiary.

Historical context. This record is preserved from the September 16 archive. A new page layout does not mean every original claim was reverified. Event dates describe the subject, not when this site published it.

The test

An archived capture of Dubsmash's own homepage from 24 November 2015 describes the app under the tagline 'Say it with video,' explaining a sound-based format: users pick a sound from a 'Soundboard,' record themselves 'Dubbing' over it, and share the result. The page states a self-reported figure that '75,000,000+ Dubbers around the world have spread the fun across 192 countries' and credits the German company 'Mobile Motion GmbH' with a copyright line reading '2014 - 2015.' Dubsmash's own press page, archived 24 June 2020, curates the company's press coverage back to 2015 and cites a 2016 Fortune interview describing a co-founder as having 'co-founded the startup in 2014.'

What the evidence says

The 75-million figure is Dubsmash's own self-reported claim on its marketing homepage, not an audited or independently measured count, and it should be labelled as such rather than treated as verified usage data. The 'co-founded... in 2014' detail comes from Fortune's reporting, reproduced on Dubsmash's own curated press page rather than stated by Dubsmash directly, so the founding year is best attributed to that outside interviewer's account. Later, Reddit's own 2024 registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission lists 'Dubsmash Inc.' as a Delaware subsidiary of Reddit, a corporate filing that establishes later ownership without giving an acquisition date.

The sample and the variance

Three different kinds of record sit side by side here: a self-reported usage figure with no stated measurement method, a founding year from third-party reporting rather than the company itself, and a formal legal filing that confirms ownership but not timing. None should be substituted for another; the SEC filing is the most reliable for the single fact it states, and the least useful for anything else about Dubsmash's history.

What to try next

When a platform's own homepage states a usage figure, check whether it names a measurement method or a period, and treat an unattributed number as self-reported until a corroborating disclosure appears elsewhere. This is an editorial standard, not a rule Dubsmash's own page states.

  • Does the cited figure state who measured it, over what period, and by what method?
  • Is a company's founding date coming from the company itself or from a reporter's account that the company later republished?
  • Does a corporate filing establish ownership, a date, or both, and which claim in the piece actually needs which?

Dubsmash's own record moves from a self-reported user count in 2015 to a line in a competitor-turned-owner's legal filing nine years later, and each document supports only the narrow claim it was built to make.
